Men just don't get it, Pride and Prejudice is exclusively for women. If you're a man you sure can try reading it or watching one of the numerous adaptations, but don't be surprised if it just goes over your head. It's like women and soccer only in reverse, you take her to the stadium but she goes away puzzled with no clue as to what all the shouting and screaming was all about. Now she gets you to read Pride and Prejudice and... Well, maybe there are some men out there who know but I've yet to meet one of them.
Pride and Prejudice is exclusively for women thus when a big male thug reads its intro sentence in Black Books, it's totally hilarious if you know where that intro sentence comes from, most women will get it and have a laugh but most men won't get it, the joke will be on them.
What about Jane Austen's other books? Well, obviously they were all written from the female perspective, the female world view but Pride and Prejudice is definitely the one that for some mysterious reason has passed the test of time with flying colors while the others barely scraped through.
So if you're a woman and read it, appreciate it and enjoy it, if you're a man, read it and appreciate that despite all the sex ed in the world women still remain enigmas wrapped in mysteries.
