The poll for who is the best Elizabeth Bennet just ended and Jeniffer Ehle came out on top with 60% of the votes. Keira Knightley is second with a very modest 32%. Turns out Jeniffer Ehle's Elizabeth is almost twice as popular as her closest contender.
Obviously the result of this poll is one more proof that this far in the history of Pride and Prejudice screen adaptations the 1995 BBC series remains the best. And with Jeniffer Ehle it's probably love by association. She did a most decent job playing Elizabeth, no doubt about that. One may argue that Keira Knightley was disadvantaged by having to play in a shorter version with fewer lines to say but Elizabeth Garvie in the 1979 BBC adaptation had at least as many lines as Jeniffer Ehle, or perhaps even more. So it's not just about how many lines you've got it's also about how you say them. Elizabeth Garvie recited her role, Keira Knightley mostly posed and Jeniffer Ehle lived it. Well done and a most deserved victory in our poll.
I've yet to see the 1938 version so I can't say much about it. As for the 1940 adaptation, after a lot of on-line searching I was finally able to get my hands on it and puzzlement is the word that describes my reaction to it based. Sure all the characters have the same names as in the book and even the plot is somewhat similar but with all due respect to Sir Lawrence Olivie and the other members of the cast, it's not Pride and Prejudice, it's a vaudeville loosely based off Jane Austen's book. If considered in separation from the book, it's not a bad movie but as an adaptation it totally sucks ass. So perhaps I shouldn't even have included Greer Garson in this poll, while the character she played may be called Elizabeth Bennet her portrayal is probably the furthest departure from the original I've seen so far. And as for Lawrence Olivie, his Mr. Darcy is anything but Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy.
